The past week on Wednesday June 12th, some members of my college club Gradient and I hosted our first self-organized event as part of PES Week, in collaboration with BMSCE IEEE PES and Sensors Council. With our seniors occupied with exams, I was grateful for the opportunity to independently explore and learn the intricacies of event management. It was a valuable and enriching experience for me.
The event, “Evengers: Auction Wars,” i.e. a pun and parody of “Avengers: Infinity War.” It comprised three rounds. The first round was a crossword puzzle with general questions, from which we selected the highest and fastest-scoring teams to play Jeopardy. The Jeopardy topics aligned with the theme of the week that was "Empowering Electrical Mobility Innovation". In these two rounds, contestants accumulated points.
The main event was the auction, featuring seven parts of an EV car, each with an efficiency rating. Each part was sold twice with different efficiency ratings. The team with the most efficient points at the end won. Surprisingly, the top two teams had the same efficiency points after the auction, but we were prepared for this situation. The tie-breaker was the amount of money remaining in their purse.
As one of the event coordinators, I was involved in various tasks, including design, ensuring everyone completed their work properly, and making sure everything got done. One key lesson I learned is that the best way to achieve results is to take initiative, do what you think is best, and use feedback to improve your work. Otherwise you’ll get stuck in an endless loop of trying to anticipate what others might want. Some things go your way, some don't. Some people listen, and some don't and some are just useless. It doesn't mean you are doing a bad job. As long as you know that you are putting max effort into it, that's all that matters.
The event was a success in my eyes, 45+ people participated, positive feedback saying the event was fun and the PES club were also thrilled with the success and are eager to collaborate more in the future is all I need to take this as a win.
I'm glad I had the opportunity to be part of another event and take on a different role with new responsibilities. It was truly wonderful, and I hope to continue growing and achieving more.
