Movie 14 - Assassin's Creed (2016) , Dir. Justin Kurzel.
The movie follows an Assassin Aguilar (Michael Fassbender) whose descendant is Cal. He is part of a secret society called the Assassin's Creed that protects an artifact called the Apple of Eden that holds the reason for humanity's violent nature from an organization called the Templar Order, that want the apple to control humanity. They are using Cal to figure out where the Apple is hidden using a technology called the Animus that accesses genetic memory.
The movie is quite good. It's an interesting story that involves fantasy and science that somehow seems to work wonderfully. The science and technology shown in the movie is quite interesting and looks quite cool like the Animus rig that can be compared to a flight rig used in movies to stimulate flight for a character. The action sequences are quite good, looks cool and doesn't look ridiculous , the camera doesn't do fast cuts during the scenes which is good allowing for the viewer to see the action.
A couple of issues i have are that Cal's backstory is not shown a lot. It was confusing like why are they choosing him or what is his relation to the Creed. It does get explained eventually but in the beginning it feels they are rushing the story and leaving important parts out, there is also a moment where i was confused by the Abstergo company who are capturing the assassins if they were the Creed or the Templar. i figured it out near the end.
Another issue i have is that certain dialogues are very weak . An instance is they have kind of mentioned that the Templar order is a powerful organization but they don't seem to show it quite well. The dialogue by Alan Rikkin (Jeremy Irons) about the Apple and how he wants to control and how the Templar wants to bring order doesn't fell very strong, the writing is quite weak. Even Sophia Rikkin (Marion Cotillard) who is the brains of the Animus operation said a phrase that was said by Dr. Oppenheimer which was a coincidence to me, was "Now i am become death, the destroyer of worlds", it felt very out of place because they story and hasn't done a good enough job of establishing how powerful and deadly the Apple and the Templar are. I say coincidence because i just gave My Review of Oppenheimer(2023) yesterday (13/11/23) and hearing it the line again was crazy.
One thing that i found interesting about the movie is how there is nothing that explicitly says that the Creed or Templars are the good people or bad people. They are both shown to be operating in a sort of a gray area , they aren't showing subplots or things that make you choose a side which can be a good or confusing.
I haven't played the video game that the movie has been adapted from but now its definitely feels worth playing it.
The movie overall is quite good, not a lot of complex story lines it's quite simple and straightforward. The acting is fine, the sets and CGI are also done quite well. 7/10
