Movie 10 - Neeyat (2023), Dir. Anu Menon.
The movie follows CBI inspector Mira Rao(Vidya Balan) investigating the sudden death of billionaire fraud Ashish Kapoor(Ram Kapoor) on his birthday at his mansion surrounded by by friends and family that all have a motive to kill him.
The movie has good things and bad things, First the bad stuff.
The movie lacked the ability to make me wonder who the killer might be by useless information and motives that lead nowhere, as the story progresses i thought that maybe its a Murder on the Orient Express(Agatha Christie) situation, but i stopped thinking because it got confusing in between with all the side character reveals.
The finding of clues was done well but things that are going through the mind of the detective are not shown to the viewer, leading the viewer to somehow just accept that it happened.
The lighting for all the dark scenes were horrible, even after increasing brightness and other features i could barely see whats going on.
The story took too much time focusing on certain characters.
While its supposed to be a murder mystery with things happening every couple of minutes, every couple of minutes only drama is happening.
Now the good parts.
The twists at the end that reveals Ashish kapoor wasn't dead but was faking his death so he can escape, The fact that Vidya Balan is not the real detective but a lover of one of the deceased who died due to the fraud work of Ashish Kapoor and wanted to expose him before he made any sneaky plays, That was good in my opinion, i did not see that coming at all and was a surprisingly unique twist to a classic murder mystery.
The movie has sub-par acting by all the cast, no one really stands out or no one has a quirk or a characteristic quality that separates them making the viewer think they might be the killer, they are all written to be rich, entitled, humans which when shown in movies is always makes the viewers hate them.
The movie is a good attempt at a Bollywood version of a murder mystery and we definitely need to see more new Bollywood murder mysteries, but with Bollyoood movies there always has to be some drama which is one of the reasons the movie felt boring and eventually makes you like it less.
Its a fun one time watch, there are interesting parts but there are also boring parts.
5/10
