Movie 28 - Drishyam (2015), Dir. Nishikant Kamat.
The movie follows Vijay (Ajay Devgn) as he covers up a murder of an IG Meera Deshmukh (Tabu).
The movie had a very good mystery aspect to it. The issue with some mystery movies is that the viewer can predict what happens usually around half the time. This movie turns the tables and shows the aftermath of committing the crime and how far one will go to save themselves.
The length they show Vijay going to create alibis is absolutely crazy. I did not expect that at all. The whole reveal of how he made the alibis and also how he unknowingly coerced his friends to support his alibi is very devious and smart. The script was very good in not revealing the thought process of Vijay earlier, as it would have made it seem that anyone can do such a thing. The way he was able to fool the police and make it seem like they had a grudge, making them question their own opinions and tricking them into believing his version is honestly great writing and amazing gaslighting.
The acting from all the cast is absolutely brilliant. Each of them was unique and an emotional connection could be formed with each of the characters whether it is hatred or sorrow. For example with Vijay you could understand that he had do what was best for his family. For Meera in the beginning I was able to see her perspective and feel bad for her as she lost a son, but that eventually went away when she went with police brutality to get the answers.
The writing for them is on point and very well executed.
The scenes where the Vijay and his family had to talk to the police and stick to their story is flawless, they each lie in a way that makes sense.
Initially, I thought there was a huge plot hole with Vijay's dates and said activities not matching up. But when it was revealed or, should I say, unraveld by Meera, I was stunned and wowed. The dedication and the will to do something like that is crazy, and honestly, I can't even call him the bad guy. The man is street smart and even more. The police really underestimated him. The reveal at the end of him burying the remains under the police station is absolutely crazy.
There was a supposed plot hole that since Vijay and his family went to hotels and restaurants, their CCTV camera footage could have proved their guilt earlier. The way I see it is that CCTV quality is generally not 4K or even 1080P, they are grainy, and some companies even delete the footage after a day or even weeks as data storage costs are high. I choose to believe in this theory. As far as the bank CCTV goes, that makes sense, as banks need to maintain high security and detail, and therefore they are most likely to forever store the footage.
I am aware that this adapted from a book called "The Devotion of Suspect X" written by Keigo Higashino and the Malayalam movie Drishyam (2013), which is why I want to give them a special mention as it is important to recognize these versions too as they are great works of art.
To conclude, this movie is a very good Drama/Thriller and a must-watch. I definitely plan to watch and review Drishyam 2 (2022). The one I saw is made in Hindi, but it does not matter, put on the subtitles and have your mind blown away. 10/10
