Movie review 11 - Sharper

Movie 11 - Sharper(2023), Dir. Benjamin Caron.

TLDR for the movie : Just conners conning each other.

The movie tells the story from each characters perspective, it doesn't tell the same story but the POV(point of view) switches from character to character as the story goes on.

This was an interesting way of story telling, it kind of felt like the Percy Jackson : Gods of Olympus(Book, Author - Rick Riordan) series which i personally enjoyed.

The sequences are Tom(Justice Smith), Sandra(Briana Middeleton) pt. 1, Max (Sebastian Stan) , Madeline(Julianne Moore) and Sandra pt. 2

The first sequence of the movie had me feeling the movie was going to be boring because i was so confused about the plot like why was did Sandra steal the money from Tom despite being his girlfriend. But it eventually the story became much better because things started clearing up.

Once the second sequence began things started making sense like why sandra conned tom and how Max plays a part in it and all the story was good now.

The third part that is Max was also interesting, seeing how he conned others and how he ends up making a big score with Madeline by tricking a billionare, but Madeline then ditches him for an even better and bigger score and then ratting Max to the police, The story becomes even better now.

The fourth part that is the story progression from Madeline's POV was also quite good, Julianne Moore stunned in every scene, her acting was one of the best of the movie. in this part they show that she has inherited billions of dollars which she gets when her husband who she conned dies and her stepson Tom just gets a trust, but she has control, The story has peaked here.

After this is where i felt it started to go downhill, They all are at a standoff, Madeline shoots Tom, to buy the silence of others she gives the money away to the trust. When she is escaping she realizes that the blood is fake realizing that Tom is not dead, He gets all the money now. She is left with nothing and Tom rekindles the relationship with Sandra, The story is now bad.

The part i didn’t like was Tom getting everything in the end, I’m not saying Madeline and Max should have gotten the money but Tom’s character felt so weak, like boo hoo you got scammed that’s your fault, don’t become a depressed idiot. Sandra was alright but she had no real value to the story apart from being a pawn as she had not major story involvement.

Since the movie shows the characters interacting 95% of the time with each other they need to be made integral by having them be more involved, there where side characters like Tipsy(Phillip Johnson Richardson) and Richard Hobbes(John Lithgow), that despite being a side character had a much bigger involvement that someone like Sandra.

The story was quite good and was fun to watch, the amount of twists were so interesting and i don’t think anyone could have figured the ending. it is a fun thrill to watch until the climax, it’s able to keep the viewer engaged and thinking what the next twist is going to be. 7/10
